First ever critical study of Tolkiens little-known essay, which reveals how language invention shaped the creation of Middle-earth and beyond, to George R R Martins Game of Thrones. J.R.R. Tolkiens linguistic invention was a fundamental part of his artistic output, to the extent that later on in life he attributed the existence of his mythology to the desire to give his languages a home and peoples to speak them. As Tolkien puts it in A Secret Vice, the making of language and mythology are related functions. In the 1930s, Tolkien composed and delivered two lectures, in which he explored these two key elements of his sub-creative methodology. The second of these, the seminal Andrew Lang Lecture for 1938-9, On Fairy-Stories, which he delivered at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, is well known. But many years before, in 1931, Tolkien gave a talk to a literary society entitled A Hobby for the Home, where he unveiled for the first time to a listening public the art that he had both himself encountered and been involved with since his earliest childhood: the construction of imaginary languages in full or outline for amusement. This talk would be edited by Christopher Tolkien for inclusion as A Secret Vice in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays and serves as the principal exposition of Tolkiens art of inventing languages. This new critical edition, which includes previously unpublished notes and drafts by Tolkien connected with the essay, including his Essay on Phonetic Symbolism, goes some way towards re-opening the debate on the importance of linguistic invention in Tolkiens mythology and the role of imaginary languages in fantasy literature.

New York, 1916. Monroe Simonov, a song-plugger from Brooklyn, is in love with a Ziegfeld Follies dancer who has left him for California. Inez Kennedy, a fashion model in a department store, has just one season remaining to find a wealthy husband before she must return to the Midwest. Anna Denisova, a glamorous political exile, gives lectures and writes letters while she waits for the Russian people to overthrow their Tsar. Then America joins the war, jazz sweeps the citys dance floors, the old order is swept away by newly minted millionaires and the entire nation is gripped by the Red Scare. In this richly atmospheric and deftly plotted novel, the lives of three characters become entangled in ways they never could have envisaged. A tale of passion, infidelity and betrayal that hurtles towards an explosive climax.

Aleksandr made a silent promise to the Lord. God would deliver him - would deliver Russia - and he would make Russia into the country that the Almighty wanted it to be. He would be delivered from the destruction that wasteth at noonday, and from the pestilence that walketh in darkness - the terror by night ... 1825. Russia has been at peace for a decade. Bonaparte is long dead and the threat of invasion is no more. For Colonel Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov, life is calm. The French have been defeated, as have the twelve monstrous creatures he once fought alongside, and then against, all those years before. His duty is still to his tsar, Aleksandr the First, but today the enemy is merely human. However, the tsar himself knows he can never be at peace. He is well aware of the uprising fermenting within his own army, but his true fear is of something far more terrible - something that threatens to bring damnation upon him, his family and his country. Aleksandr cannot forget a promise: a promise sealed in blood ... and broken a hundred years before. Now the victim of the Romanovs betrayal has returned to demand what is his. The knowledge chills Aleksandrs very soul. And for Aleksei, it seems the vile pestilence that once threatened all he held dear has returned, thirteen years later ...
